Dr. Korey Jorgensen was saluted last week by Club Q Laguna, the Laguna Beach Seniors social group for the LGBT community, as well as at a brunch by the Laguna Beach Community Clinic.

Jorgensen recently retired after 42 years with the Laguna Beach Community Clinic where he played a central role in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Laguna Beach. In the early 1990s, he established one of the first early intervention programs for HIV-infected people in Orange County and has been the primary care physician for countless persons living with HIV/AIDS.

The clinic honored Jorgensen with a champagne brunch on Sunday, Jan. 25.

 

Mayor Visits the Canyon Conservancy

Mayor Bob Whalen is the guest speaker at the next Laguna Canyon Conservancy dinner meeting, Monday, Feb. 2, at Tivoli Terrace, 650 Laguna Canyon Rd. on the Festival of the Arts grounds.

A free workshop, Pruning for Healthy and Beautiful Plants, will be presented at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, at the South Laguna Community Garden Park,

Eagle Rock Way and South Coast Highway.

Gilbert Briseño, master tree artist and landscape contractor, will give a demonstration on pruning for the health and beauty of trees and shrubs.

Briseño trained under famed landscape architect Fred Lang.

Champagne Brunch Is the Cat’s Meow

The Blue Bell Foundation for Cats invites all to a champagne brunch fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 8 at Tivoli Too, 777 Laguna Canyon Rd.

Tickets are $50 for adults and $15 for children under 12 and benefit the organization that provides permanent housing for cats whose owners can no longer care for them.

Food Pantry Accepts Grant

The Laguna Food Pantry received a $1,000 grant from Hunger Is, a venture of the Safeway Foundation and the Entertainment Industry Foundation.

Managers of the Pavilions store in Boat Canyon nominated the pantry for the grant, made possible by customers who contributed during a month-long in-store fundraiser.

“It’s a great honor to receive this Hunger Is grant and the recognition of the Pavilions managers for our work,” said Andy Siegenfeld, president of the pantry’s board.

 

Look Into Library Events

Learn about the benefits of being a member of Toastmaster, whose members work on polishing their public speaking and leadership skills.

Toastmasters meet in the Community Room of the Laguna Beach Public Library, 363 Glenneyre St., on Mondays from 6-7:30 p.m.

Also at the library, pajama story time with the Sunshine Readers whisks the whole family off to dreamland from 6:30-7:30 on Tuesday, Feb. 3.

On Wednesdays, from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. toddlers, preschoolers and their caretakers can participate in the Early Literacy Storytime.

On Thursdays at 10:30 a.m., the Peapod Academy meets for songs, finger plays and board books. No registration is required.

Spend a Morning at the Lake

Join a Laguna Canyon foundation naturalist from 9-11 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 1, for a walk to Barbara’s Lake while learning about native California plant life.

This is an easy two-mile hike for ages 8 and up in Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, Little Sycamore Canyon Staging Area/Nix Nature Center.

Date Set for Lifeguard Tryouts

Sign-in for lifeguard tryouts begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Main Beach Lifeguard White Tower on Saturday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, March 14.

Attendance at one test session is required. Candidates must be ready to enter the water at 9 a.m. and the application completed and submitted prior to Feb. 26 at 4 p.m.

Conservancy Host Wetlands Convention 

The public is welcome at a symposium on Southern California wetlands presented by the Newport Bay Conservancy from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Back Bay Science Center, 600 Shellmaker Rd., Newport Beach.

Guest speakers include regional researchers and natural resource managers.

Lunch and field trips through the Upper Newport Bay are included in the $20 fee. Registration can be made at www.newportbay.org .
