Join the Dialogue on Disaster Preparedness
Disaster workshop co-chairs Kelly Boyd and Elizabeth Pearson invite the community to attend a public workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, in the City Council chambers, 505 Forest Avenue, to map out disaster preparation options and share strategies about what can be done before, during and after an incident occurs to minimize damage and speed recovery efforts.
All residents and business owners are encouraged to come and share and learn from the experiences of others. Input from those who have experienced the effects of fire, flood, and landslides in Laguna Beach is particularly valued. Business owners can share what has worked for them to minimize damage to property and inventory; and specialized professionals can share their expertise in geology, technology, emergency relief, insurance claims, etc.
Salad Sprouts for Sale
Transition Laguna Beach’s Food Group will be at the Farmers Market on Saturday, March 26, selling vegetable seedlings in a booth located at the back of the market on Local’s Row.
This month’s variety includes tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, swiss chard, kale, arugula, turnips, variety of lettuce, cilantro, and spinach to name a few.
Many of the seedlings are from seeds harvested in Laguna, and all have been grown organically here in Laguna.
Professor Shares Her Favorite Topic
Historian Glenna Matthews will speak at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at 10 a.m. on Sunday, March 27, about the founding mothers of women’s suffrage.
Her interest in the contributions of American women to our culture resulted in several books, including “The Rise of Public Woman” and “Just a Housewife.” Her latest book, “The Golden State in the Civil War” is near publication.
Matthews’ own family history is deeply rooted in Laguna, where her father was editor of the South Coast News and later the Laguna Beach Post. She graduated from Laguna Beach High School and as an adult returned to build a house on a lot acquired earlier by her family.
City Workshops Encourage Local Business Start-ups
To promote business opportunities in Laguna Beach, the city continues hosting “Open for Business” workshops, with the next workshop to be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, in the Laguna Beach Community Center at 380 Third Street.
The workshop is geared towards those interested in opening or expanding businesses in town, and participants will include planning commissioners Linda Dietrich and Norm Grossman; business owner Bonnie Wolin; architect Kirk Saunders; and planner Monica Tuchscher.

Discards Needed to Restock Inventory
Assistance League’s Turnabout Shop is in need of small furniture items, lamps, pictures, housewares, and quality clothing for its upcoming garage sale next month.
Though the thift shop is not accepting furniture or electronics, other discards are welcome. Drop them off at the shop, 526 Glenneyre Street. The sale will be held April 15 and 16, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the garage below the Chapter House at 547 Catalina Street.

Tickets on Sale for Rotary Wine, Scholarship Event
The public is invited to the Rotary Club’s sixth annual Grapes for Grads Wine Tasting & Scholarship Fundraiser, to be held from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 17, at Tivoli Too!, 777 Laguna Canyon Road.
The $35 per person event raises scholarship funds to help students of Laguna Beach High School and Laguna College of Art & Design.
Wines from California, France, Italy, Argentina and New Zealand will be sampled alongside snacks prepared by K’ya Bistro & Bar. Student artists will be demonstrating painting, animation, sculpture and more. In honor of the club’s 80th anniversary, Montage’s Chef Rob Wilson will bake a commemorative cake sliced at 1 p.m.
