To take artistic inspiration to a new level, 48 school children went outdoors to paint on location, following the Laguna Beach art colony’s plein air tradition.
This week, the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association builds on that legacy, inviting 35 plein air artists to town for a competition. Events include matching students with mentor artists. Their work will be exhibited in LPAPA’s gallery space at the Forest & Ocean Gallery, 480 Ocean Ave.
Public art shows at Tivoli Too starting at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 15 and 16, conclude the contest. Proceeds from the sale of artwork benefit both the artists and nonprofit LPAPA.

Gallery Acquires Thornsley’s Works
A collection of art works from the estate of the late Laguna Beach artist Terry Thornsley is for sale at the Forest and Ocean Gallery.
Included are large-scale and smaller bronze and stone sculptures depicting marine life, reflecting the artist’s passion for nature. There is also a sizable collection of Thornsley’s watercolor and mixed media paintings, including one depicting the water wheel on the Sawdust Festival grounds that was used as the 1995 festival poster.
The gallery at 480 Ocean Ave. will carry the works through Dec. 31, a sale sanctioned by his sister, Tamara Thornsley.
