A bicyclist was killed and his riding companion injured when a motorist hit the pair pedaling southbound on state Highway 133 near the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park nature center early this morning, Friday, June 28, authorities said.
The vehicle driven by a 25-year-old female driver from Irvine collided with the bicyclists for an undetermined reason, said CHP investigator E. Barnard, of the San Juan Capistrano office. The driver was not immediately arrested and alcohol is not suspected in the investigation, which is continuing to determine if the driver will be charged, Barnard said.
The cyclist who died at the scene was described as James Waller, 53, of Mission Viejo man, the coroner’s office reported. His riding companion, 48, of Fullerton, was transported to Mission Viejo’s Mission Hospital, Barnard said.
