Members of Love Your Kidneys, a newly established Laguna Beach High School club, ran through four miles of obstacles and sodden terrain during its first annual fundraiser at the Irvine Lake Mud Run last Friday, March 31.

After being diagnosed with kidney disease as a freshman, Lexi Del Toro, now a junior, started the club and rallied students and families to participate.

The money raised supports the non-profit organization Kidney For Life and go directly to the UCLA Department of Nephrology’s research efforts. Chronic Kidney Disease affects over 26 million people.

The event drew 9,000 participants, including the 40-member Kidney For Life team of mostly LBHS students and families. “I am so grateful to a supportive community who braved the mud for a worthy cause,” Lexi said.
