District’s Congressman Acts to Loosen Gun Laws
The tragic and violent deaths of 17 Parkland, Fla., students, at the hands of another deranged shooter with access to military grade weapons, is reprehensible.
I’m distressed to learn that Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (48th), recently co-sponsored H.R. 38, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017.
Shortly after another mass shooting in Las Vegas, the House passed this major piece of gun legislation- the bill requires each state to recognize permits for the concealed carry of a handgun issued in other states. This would force California, a state with stricter gun laws, to honor permits from other states with looser gun laws. It’s now in the hands of the Senate.
I am concerned about the coherence of Rohrabacher’s statement posted Feb. 16 on his Facebook page following the Parkland shooting. He blames school shootings on psychotropic drugs.
“As a father of three, I grieve with all Americans the loss … in Florida… We must commit ourselves to ending this scourge. We have come to a troubling point in our country’s history in which these acts of mass murder… are staring us in the face. We must take account of all factors, especially studying the incidence of psychotropic drugs prescribed to public school students… We need to find out if psychopathic drugs lead to the insane murder of students by students. In the aftermath…we always hear calls for the confiscation of firearms from honest people… It ignores an array of other contributing factors such as the irresponsible prescribing of psychotropic drugs… …one solution might be the creation of a federal list of those prescribed such drugs… We should make it illegal for anyone to sell a weapon to any individual on that list. However, we should not try to limit the rights of our honest citizens to possess weapons…a right granted them by the U.S. Constitution.”
Rohrabacher has no plan to keep our kids safe. In fact, he has accepted over $30,000 from gun lobbies and votes in favor of loosening gun laws. Apparently Rohrabacher cites numerous studies to back up his claim linking psychotropic drugs to mass shootings. This is implausible. HIPAA laws prevent access to such personal data.
Calls to confiscate citizen’s weapons? Reports indicate most Americans support stricter gun laws. To quote the brave students of Stoneman Douglas H.S. “If you’re not with us, you’re against us and you’re against saving the lives of innocent children…”
Dana, are you with us? Where are your values?
