The Math Stars Club from El Morro Elementary School took first place in the measurement/geometry category at this year’s mathematics field day competition held on May 14 at Capistrano Valley High School.
Sponsored by the Orange County Mathematics Council (ocmathcouncil.com), the competition overall included 52 individual schools from 19 districts, which were divided into northern and southern sections. El Morro’s Math Stars Club competed in the southern section against 20 other fourth grade teams in five areas, including mathematical reasoning, statistics/data analysis/probability, number sense, measurement/geometry, and algebra/functions.
The team met at least once weekly to review math concepts and tackle difficult math problems in preparation for the event. The kids worked hard, showed perseverance, and managed to think “outside the box,” besides having a lot of fun along the way.
