Fall Sports Update: Damato Records 100th Win

Boys Water Polo (10-6, 2-0)

Breakers are surging and shaking up the Orange County and CIF polls with a pair of key wins entering the final weeks of the regular season.  Laguna hoped to complete their trifecta this past Thursday when they hosted Murrieta Valley ranked fourth in the D-II CIF division just ahead of Laguna.

Laguna defeated Sage Hill 25-4 on Oct. 3 in the local pool as 13 different players scored for the hosts in the Orange Coast League match. Riley Thomas had four goals, Trevor Collins, Trent Sadler, and Caleb Scott each had three scores. Laguna has now won 32 league matches in a row dating back to 2006.

On Thursday, Oct. 4, Laguna cooled off a hot Dana Hills squad with a 11-10 triple overtime victory over the Dolphins (ranked fourth in Division I and sixth in the county). The win at the Laguna community pool was coach Ethan Damato’s 100th win as head coach of Laguna. The former player (class of ’00) is in his fifth season as the team’s mentor and trails only Rick Scott (13 seasons 1990-2002) in career wins. Against Dana, Laguna jumped out to a 3-1 lead and used a balance attack for the win. Camron Hauer and Duncan Lynde each had three scores, Jack Dodson three assists and Riley Thomas three steals to lead the team.

This past Tuesday, Oct. 9, Laguna took down Foothill ( second in Division II and fifth in the county) 10-7 at the local pool. Riley Thomas led the squad with four goals including two in the first period that gave the Breakers a commanding 5-1 lead over the Knights. Feerless goalie, Maxx McCarter had 13 saves stopping a number of difficult shots.

 

Girls Golf (4-7, 4-3)

Breakers are in second place in the Orange Coast League, defeating Costa Mesa on Oct. 3 with the squad shooting 225, their lowest score of the season. Leslie Dwight shot 41 to lead the squad at Mesa Linda Golf course followed by Jackie McMahon at 45, MaryKate Quellmalz 45, Jamie Henrickson 46, and Audrey Curtis at 48.

 

Girls Tennis (13-3, 7-0)

Breakers continued to hammer the league competition, defeating Saddleback 18-0 on Thursday Oct. 4 and Estancia 16-2 this past Tuesday, Oct. 9.  Laguna has not lost a league match since dropping an 11-7 contest to Corona del Mar on Sept. 29, 2005 when the Breakers were in the Pacific Coast League. Breakers have two challenging non-league matches scheduled before the regular season ends, facing Los Alamitos this past Wednesday and Santa Margarita on Monday, Oct. 15. To help keep the players ready for post-season, the Breakers also hosted a team tournament this past weekend, facing Aliso Niguel and El Toro in abbreviated team match play.  Breakers beat Aliso 8-4 and the Chargers 9-0.

 

Girls Volleyball (10-5, 5-0)

Breakers rolled through league play last week playing three matches in three consecutive days. On Tuesday, the Breakers held off the league’s second-best team, defeating Calvary Chapel 25-21, 25-19, 25-21 at Dugger Gym.  Alyse Ford had 20 kills while Sabrina Stillwell added nine. Sevena Dvorak had four aces and dished out 32 assists.

The following day, Laguna traveled to Manhattan Beach to face Mira Costa in historic Fisher Gym. The Mustangs were celebrating their 1982 National Championship team, but Laguna was not intimidated by the setting, taking Costa to the full five sets. Down 14-12 in the fifth set, a hit by Mira Costa was ruled in to end the match that saw Laguna lose 25-17, 23-25, 25-17, 17-25, 12-15. Ford had 37 kills, Stillwell nine, Julia Goggin eight, Sami Harting five. Goggin had 23 digs followed by Alexx Murphy with 14 and Francie Holte with 13. Sevana Dvorak dished out 49 assists and recorded three aces. It was Sevana’s turn to serve in the fifth set had the ball that appeared in been ruled in the Breaker’s favor.

The next day, Laguna defeated Godinez (1-3, 7-6) 25-13, 25-19, 25-12 at Dugger Gym.  Laguna used 12 players in the victory with Ford leading the team with 15 kills, Stilwell with 10. Breakers recorded 13 service aces.

On this past Monday, Laguna defeated Costa Mesa 25-8, 25-1, 25-8 at the Mesa Gym. In the second set, Samantha Kruger served 21 consecutive points to sink the Mustangs. The team recorded 17 aces in the sweep with nine different players recording kills.

Breakers travel to Long Beach this Saturday, Oct. 13 for another break from league play to face Poly in the eighth annual Steve Lewis Invitational at Lakewood High School. Millikan plays Marina at 1 p.m., Laguna plays at 3 p.m., Wilson vs. Villa Park at 5 p.m. and Lakewood faces Los Alamitos at 7 p.m.
