The Festival of Arts opened despite a brush fire breaking out less than a mile away in Laguna Canyon last Friday, July 3.

The quick response of firefighting resources extinguished the 3 p.m. blaze within three hours, though state Highway 133 and Laguna Canyon Road were closed due to the wildfire.

The Festival’s planned ribbon cutting ceremony for its new contemporary façade was delayed, but went on as planned. It included remarks from Festival President Fred Sattler, architect Jay Bauer, and Laguna Beach Mayor Bob Whalen, who had come directly from the scene of the emergency on Arroyo Drive.

Over 2,000 guests braved the fire-caused congestion to enjoy the new art exhibit, live music by Derek Bordeaux and food by Colette’s Catering.
