Nearly 2,000 athletes and 47 schools participated in the Laguna Beach Trophy Invitational Track and Field meet, held on the Hulst Oval at Guyer Field last Saturday, March 19.
The event on the Laguna Beach High School track counts as one of the biggest fundraising events for the campus track and field program, according to coach and organizer Steve Lalim.
Senior Coco Putnam was Laguna’s top finisher, taking first in the girls 400-meter dash with a time of 57.91. She also finished second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 45.21.
Fellow senior Pearl Shoemaker took sixth in the 1,600 meter run and finished 5:21.05.
Sophomore Lauren Struss finished third in long jump with a 15-03 mark.
In varsity shot put, Laguna girls Jacky Cenan and Malia Helms took second and fourth place, with 38-10 and 35-02 marks, respectively. Freshman Evelyn Kilburg took ninth.
Ninth-grade girls also proved strong finishers. Team mates Bella Fonk finished fifth in the 800-meter frosh-soph race with a time of 2:34.42, Shanai Auguis took 10th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.73 and Sidney Williams-Goldberg took fifth in hurdles with a time of 52.72.
Three senior boys finished among the top 25 in the 300-hurdles, Brody Seebass, Cale Airey and Andrew Humphries.

The night before, the track hosted a city meet for local school-age youngsters, with similar events, with the exception of pole vaulting, organized by age division.
