Seniors Taylor Pitz and Chris Paul were named as Laguna’s top athletes at the annual All-Sports Banquet held this past Tuesday at Tivoli Terrace.

Pitz has been Laguna’s most successful surfer the past four years and she will be continuing her education at UCLA.

Paul is among Laguna’s most decorated athletes of all-time earning three straight seasons of all-CIF recognition in football, breaking most of the school records in receiving, setting an Orange County record in touchdown passes caught, and re-writing the school record books in baseball where he is expected to be named to the all-CIF squad for the third straight season. A four-year starter in baseball, Paul carries a .439 career batting average and will continue his baseball career at UC Berkeley.

Also honored was baseball Coach Jeff Sears, taking the special recognition award for the second straight year for his support of the entire school sports program.  Sears was also honored as Coach of the Year for the record-setting season for baseball, changing the culture of a 73-year old program that had seen little success until Sears’ arrival four seasons ago.

Athlete of character awards were presented to Taylor Pitz and to Cornell-bound Jake Michaels, a tennis player; Bianca Sganga, headed to Columbia, and also a tennis player, received the overall academic award. Samantha Garner and Taylor Preston presided over the event.
