The city’s Fire Department is proposing a fuel modification plan for undeveloped areas that border Arch Beach Heights, Portofino, and Lower Nyes Canyon. A community meeting on the topic is set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, and another scheduled for the Design Review Board Thursday, March 19, both at City Hall.

If the project is approved, brush trimming would begin in May or June, fire Chief Jeff LaTendresse said in a statement this week.

The 44-acre area of Nyes and Oro Canyons is located south of Del Mar Avenue, west of Quivera Street, north and west of Nyes Place, and east of Alta Vista Way. Fuel modification would extend 100 feet from the edge of existing residential landscaping into the undeveloped, steeply sloped canyon to create defensible space and improve the ability of residents to flee a severe fire, LaTendresse said.

Fuel modification would involve thinning and removing non-native plants by hand crews. No goats would be used, he said.
