The Laguna Ocean Foundation is currently seeking volunteers for their Tidewater Docent program, part of its effort to preserve the rocky intertidal habitat and educate beachgoers about the coastline’s natural resources.

The next class training will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point. You must be at least 18 years of age to qualify and volunteer once monthly at local tidepool sites.

Club Discovers Jewels in the Garden

South Orange County hummingbird expert Monique Rea will present “Jewels of Nature: Hummingbirds in Your Garden” at Laguna Beach Garden Club’s meeting Friday, Jan. 9.

The club meets at 9:30 a.m. at Laguna Presbyterian Church, in Tankersley Hall, 415 Forest Ave. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Rea volunteers for the Pacific Wildlife Project by rescuing injured hummingbirds and providing nests in her yard.

Turn Over a New Leaf at a Composting Workshop

A composting workshop is planned Saturday, Jan. 10, from 2-4 p.m. at Annelieses School’s Willowbrook Campus, 20062 Laguna Canyon Road.

Hosted by SEEDS Arts and Education, Inc., the workshop will be led by composter Andrew Bell, who will demonstrate building bins, layering and vermi-composting with earthworms.

The workshop is open to the public and is $15 for adults and free for children ages 12 and under. Register at www.seedsed.org.

 

‘Room to Breathe’ Movie Screening

A documentary about a surprising story of transformation in a San Francisco middle school when students are introduced to meditation will screen Wednesday, Jan. 14, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Annelieses School’s Willowbrook Campus, 20062 Laguna Canyon Rd.

SEEDS Arts and Education, Inc. will screen “Room to Breathe,” which shows the effects of mindful living. There is a $5 fee per person. Ages 8 and up only. Please R.S.V.P. at www.seedsed.org.

 

Lose Weight with Mindful Eating 

A five-hour workshop on mindful eating, sustainable gardening and cooking ideas is scheduled for 10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, at Annelieses School’s Willowbrook Campus, 20062 Laguna Canyon Rd.

The SEEDS Arts and Education, Inc. Mindful Eating workshop will be led by Deborah Eden Tull, founder of Mindful Living Revolution.

The workshop is open to the public and is $45 including lunch provided by Whole Foods. Ages 13 and up. Register at www.seedsed.org.

 

 

Institute Hosts Open House for Seniors

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute of UC Irvine will host an open house for seniors at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 7, in the OLLI classroom at 4662 Barranca Parkway, Irvine, above the Barnes & Noble, in the Woodbridge Village Shopping Center.

Seasoned adults interested in extending their knowledge of a broad range of subjects without tests, homework, or papers are invited to attend. Free parking is available and complimentary refreshments will be served.
