Fundraiser Benefits Nepal Children

“Faces of Chhahari,” a benefit to provide for the needs and educational expenses of 23 children who live at a hostel in Kathmandu, will to be held Sunday, Sept. 11.

The 5 to 7:30 p.m. event takes place in the home of Chhahari, Inc. board member Ann Shea.

Guests will be treated to music by jazz artist and new board member Victoria McGinnis, handmade tacos, wine, beer, and a silent auction that includes a stay at a Napa Valley vineyard.

The suggested donation is $75 and can be made online at www.chhahari.org or by check to c/o Davis Law, 580 Broadway, Suite 204, Laguna Beach, Calif., 92651. An electronic invitation can be requested by emailing [email protected].

Local Christine Casey founded the nonprofit in 2007.

Leif Hanson and fellow Boys and Girls Club alumnus Steve Blue are devoting their ingenuity to the third annual Night at The Ranch, 31106 S. Coast Highway, planned for Friday Sept. 16.

Guests will enjoy cocktails, a farm-to-table dinner prepared by chef Camron Woods, live and silent auction items, and live music by Taimane Gardner and Pato Banton.

“Leif, Steve and every supporter of last year’s event came to help at a critical time, and we’re happy to have their generous support again this year, said Pam Estes, the club’s executive director said.

Foundation Seeks Volunteer Docents

The Laguna Ocean Foundation is seeking volunteer tide pool docents with a willingness to educate the public about preserving the intertidal habitat and the coastline’s natural resources.

The next class training will be held 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point.

Docents must be at least 18 years of age and volunteer a minimum of once monthly at local tidepool sites, Crescent Bay, Shaws Cove, Woods Cove or Goff Cove. Jaywalkers Take Heed

Local police and other law enforcement agencies will focus on enforcement of collision-causing factors involving motorists and pedestrians Sept. 9-17.

Last year, 813 pedestrians were killed on California roadways.

Routine traffic patrols in trouble spots and targeted patrols will be deployed to crack down on drivers and pedestrians who violate traffic laws, says a police statement.

 

Chef Donates Prize to Local Hospital

230 Forest Avenue Restaurant & Bar in Laguna Beach earned recognition recently from Cox Communications under a business appreciation program.

Chef-owner Marc Cohen received naming rights for a $1,000 check, which he designated for Children’s Hospital of Orange County.

 

 

 

 

R Star Gets A Sponsor          

The R Star Foundation, headed by Laguna local Rosalind Russell, continues its support of earthquake stricken villages in Nepal with help from Be Safe Bags of Santa Barbara, which has donated travel bags with special security features.

R Star began working in poor rural Nepalese villages in 2003. Donors to the organization are credited with the distribution of 15,000 goats, building a school, drilling water wells, job training and adult literacy classes.

Be Safe offers a 10 percent discount to any buyers using the RSTAR code as well as donating 20 percent of all purchases through the end of December to R Star.

Mission Hospital Awards $1.3 Million in Grants

Mission Hospital has awarded $1.3 million in grants in the past six months to 12 organizations that provide services to south county’s underserved people, a statement says.

“This year’s grants further strengthen programs that address the prevention of substance use among youths and provide mental health, urgent care and housing support services,” Christy Cornwall, director of the hospital’s community benefit gift-giving.

Local beneficiaries include the Laguna Beach Community Clinic, which can now increase access to walk-in medical care and government-funded care; and the Boys and Girls Club, which will use the funding on program that teach youth how to resist alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

 

Mammal Center Begins Hotel Alliance

The Pacific Marine Mammal Center has struck an alliance with Kind Traveler, a hotel booking platform that encourages travelers to donate to local non-profit organizations.

Through Kind Traveler, travelers are rewarded with an exclusive rate to book directly with a particular hotel or property that donates to charity.

The Center was selected by Pasea Hotel & Spa, Huntington Beach, which will encourage guests to send donations to support the rescue and rehabilitation mission of the center on Laguna Canyon Road.

 

A Chance To Experience Kabbalat Shabbat

Musician and cantorial soloist Jason Feddy and Rabbi-Cantor Marcia Tilchin, founder of the Jewish Collaborative of Orange County, host their second Kabbalat Shabbat service at Mozambique restaurant, 1740 S. Coast Hoghway, Friday, Sept. 16.

The service begins at 6 p.m. and will be followed by an optional dinner, $42. Reservations are required by emailing [email protected].
