Jazz All-Stars Wrap Up Series

The Eric Marienthal All-Stars featuring Brian Bromberg and Mitch Forman take the stage Saturday, Aug. 17, in the final Jazz on the Green concert at the Festival of Arts,  650 Laguna Canyon Rd.

The trio will perform from 1 to 3 p.m. The concerts are free with Festival of Arts admission.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

It’s ‘Back to the USSR’ with Beatle-mania

Expect to tap into Fab Four culture at the Sawdust Art Festival’s Beatles Day on Saturday, Aug. 17, where

Beatles classics will be covered on stage and the “Octopus’ Garden” and “Yellow Submarine” resurface as art projects. Even the Sawdust Saloon gets in the act with a Euro special.

Britishmania, a Beatles tribute concert, performs through Sunday, Aug. 25 at the Laguna Playhouse, 606 Laguna Canyon Rd.

Performances will be Tuesday, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m.; and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Cooking Writer Shares Culinary Tips

Award-winning food columnist Cathy Thomas will demonstrate step-by-step some of her favorite recipes at the Festival of Arts on Sunday, Aug. 18 from 1 – 2 p.m.

On the menu is kale salad, nectarine salsa, and green bean and tomato salad. She will share finished samples.

The Festival is open daily through Aug. 31 and is free to local residents.

The Master Chorale of Saddleback Valley invites the public to attend the St. Catherine of Siena Parish School Chapel, 3090 S. Coast Highway, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, and Sunday, Aug. 25 at 3 p.m.

Seating for the concert is limited to 50 people per concert. Tickets will be $15 and a wine and cheese reception will precede the concert.

 

 

 

 

Fantasy Film Returns in Special Screening

The Newport Beach Film Festival screens the digitally restored 1982 animated classic “The Last Unicorn” in a benefit on Wednesday, Aug. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Newport’s Lido Theater, 3459 Via Lido Dr.

A Q&A with author and screenwriter Peter S. Beagle follows. Fans are encouraged to attend in costume.

In the Line Up at Surf Museum

“Compassing,” Cyrus Sutton’s film documenting the south swell of 2013 in Mexico, screens at San Clemente’s Surfing Heritage and Cultural Center on Friday, Aug. 23.

Doors at 110 Calle Iglesia open at 7:30 p.m., movie will screen at 8. Tickets are $5, and include a raffle ticket. Primo Beer and Longboard Vineyards wines will be available.
