Boys Volleyball (3-2)

Laguna shook the rust off with only three practices to compete in the 30-team Tesoro tournament last Saturday, Feb. 24, at Tesoro. Missing top returning hitter/passer Josh McManus, the Breakers went 3-2 with a pair of narrow losses and should be in the mix among the 38 schools in Division 1. Last year the Breakers lost to the eventual champion Corona del Mar in a five-set thriller in quarterfinals. At Tesoro, Laguna defeated Millikan 27-25, 25-20; San Juan Hills 25-21, 25-21; lost to Beckman 25-20, 15-25, 9-15; handed Santa Margarita their first loss with a 25-20, 20-25, 15-11 win; and lost to Tesoro 27-29, 25-23, 13-15.

Overall for the tournament, Sam Burgi led in kills with 65 hitting a solid .304 while Geste Bianchi added 39. George Knapp led in serving at 95% with six aces while Bryce Campanelli was the top blocker with four solos and 10 block assists. Aryton Garcia dished out 119 assists, five net blocks and five aces. Also having a strong game was Andrew Reavis with 16 kills, five aces and 4.5 net blocks.

Up next was a rematch with Santa Margarita this past Tuesday, Feb. 27, and the Breakers will host highly regarded Newport next Tuesday, March 6, followed by San Clemente on Thursday, March 8.
