Breakers took care of fifth-ranked Los Alamitos on Wednesday, Dec. 20, with a 12-7 win over the Griffins (5-2) in a “home” match in the full size Capistrano Valley High School pool. Sophia Lucas scored five goals with Molly Renner and Claire Kelly each scoring twice. Evan Tingler had three assists with Alana Evans and Nicole Struss adding two each. Breakers led 10-3 before clearing the bench. Laguna leads the all-time series with their future league rival, 12-5.
On Friday, Dec. 22, at a true home contest, the Breakers defeated 17th ranked ML King 14-1 at the Laguna Community Pool. Nine different players scored for the Breakers with Molly Renner leading the group with three.
This past week Laguna was seeded first in the 22nd Annual Newport Holiday Cup with the finals scheduled for 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 30, at the Newport Harbor pool (no admission charge). Mater Dei, Corona del Mar, Foothill and Newport are among the top seeded teams in the 16-team event.
