Grocery Magazine Racks Lack Substance

Editor,

“The cornerstone of democracy rests on the foundation of an educated electorate” – Thomas Jefferson

I’m accusing all of the supermarket chains of putting profit over public service when it comes to the magazines that they sell.  TV news that flashes by between advertisements for automobiles and medication, is simply inadequate. I can still remember being offered a choice of Time, US News, Newsweek, as I stood in line to pay for my groceries. Often the cover story of a news magazine was compelling and I bought one. Now it’s nothing but trash, celebrity gossip, and sensationalism.  From the publications available, no one could tell that the country has been at war for 11 years, that young men and women are dying or being maimed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

If I speak to a manger about it, the answer is, “They paid for that spot [for a trash magazine] and I can’t do anything about it.”  Phooey!
