Cheryl Ekstrom’s art works grace public spaces in Laguna Beach, with the latest installed at the corner on Broadway Street and Cliff Drive. She brought iconic Eames chairs back to life in stainless steel and in 2014 won a grant from the Laguna Beach Art Stars awards to create “Setting Forth,” an installation of vessels that served as metaphors for life’s journeys. The longtime Laguna Beach artist decamped for Los Angeles last August, months before her death from cancer at age 70 in June.

Now, her daughter Heather and son-in-law Bobby Lee are offering remains of her artistic legacy and works by her husband, painter Dennis Ekstrom (1944-2011) at a studio located at 3295 #D Laguna Canyon Rd. The studio will stay open on Mondays and Saturdays from 11a.m. to 5 p.m.

Many will remember her “Warriors of Angst,” addressing gender expectations disguised in contorted figures of geishas and suffragettes and her series of “Travelers” carrying the burdens of life.

Dennis Ekstrom was known for innovative paintings distinguished by abstract forms and thoughtfully applied cracks suggesting the passage of time and immortality of art.

The works can only be viewed or purchased via appointment through Ekstrom [email protected]. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to charities and non-profit organizations focusing on helping the mentally ill, wrote Heather Lee in a e-mail.

Works are priced in the range of $900 to $115,000. A photo book illustrating Cheryl Ekstrom’s work titled “From Then to Now in No Particular Order” is available for sale at the studio.
