Breaker Streak Continues

Baseball (5-4, 4-0)

Laguna continued to surprise the league with a fast 4-0 start for the season extending their consecutive league win streak to 38, fifth longest in Southern Section CIF history. Laguna is looking for their third straight league title, which would be their seventh in 77 years of play.

Laguna 6, Calvary Chapel 4

Blake Burzell continued to amaze the local baseball fans as the freshman came in for the final 2 2/3 innings to pitch Laguna out of a clear jam and preserve the victory this past Tuesday, March 31, at Skipper Carrillo Field. Will McInerny started the game and the Breakers were cruising for three innings and a 4-0 lead before Calvary got on the board with two runs in the fourth inning. Breakers added a run in the bottom of the fourth but McInerny could not close out the fifth requiring relief from Burzell. Alex Baker made three key stops at first base on defense and also had a hot bat. Breakers were lucky to stop the Eagles (8-3, 3-1) who had 11 hits compared to Laguna’s six

Laguna 4, Estancia 0

Blake Bruzell threw a one hitter last Friday, March 27, at Estancia for Laguna’s second complete game of the season. He allowed the lone hit, walked only one batter and struck out seven for the complete game. Breakers got on the board in the third inning, led by Jack Simon’s two-run hit. Laguna added an insurance run in the fifth inning. Anthony Norelli went two for three, scored a run and record three stolen bases. Freshman Jeff Bruyntjens also had two hits, and a run batted in for the day. Breakers now lead the series 47-25.

Up Next: Breakers hosted Godinez (4-7, 3-1) on Thursday, April 2, to complete the first round of league play and are playing in the Ryan Lemmon Tournament in Irvine. Laguna faces Golden Valley on Saturday, April 4, Woodbridge on Monday, April 6, and Marina on Tuesday, April 7. Playoffs are Wednesday and Thursday, April 8 and 9. Laguna will play El Modena at Anaheim Stadium on Tuesday, April 14 at 3:30 p.m. and resume league play at home on Wednesday, April 15, for the 100th all-time meeting with Costa Mesa.

 

Girls Sand Volleyball (5-0, 3-0)

Breakers entered the Tuesday, March 24 showdown with Saddleback Valley Christian with an unblemished record. Last Saturday, March 28, Laguna won a pair of matches at Huntington Beach.

Boys Golf (5-3, 2-0)

Breakers established themselves as the team to beat in Orange Coast League play taking Calvary Chapel 193-213 on Wednesday, March 25, and Estancia 210-217. Breakers played two matches this past week (Costa Mesa, Calvary) and resume play on Tuesday, April 14.

 

Boys Tennis (7-2, 2-0)

Laguna opened league play with a pair of easy wins defeating Saddleback 18-0 on Tuesday, March 24, at home followed by a 15-3 win at Estancia on March 26. Laguna will be challenged with their non-league matches this month starting with Dana Hills on Wednesday, April 1, Chino Hills on April 17 and Laguna Hills on April 22.

Softball (0-7)

Girls continued to struggle with a 21-1 loss to Santiago/Garden Grove on Thursday, March 26, and a 34-15 slugfest to Bolsa Grande on Monday, March 30, at the Thurston Field. League play begins Tuesday, April 14 at Costa Mesa.

 

Swimming (2-0, 1-0)

The swim squad opened their league dual meet season on Wednesday, March 25, at the local pool with the Boys swamping Saddleback 116-43 and the girls winning 124-27. A number of swimmers made automatic D-II SSCIF qualifying times. Boys: Cameron Karkoska, 50 free, 22.70 and 100 butterfly, 53.07; Erik Juliusson, 100 butterfly, 52.29 and 100 breaststroke. 1:03.45. Girls: Kasey Karkoska, 50 free, 26.00 and 100 breaststroke, 1:13.10; Aria Fischer, 500 free, 5:31.16.

Girls squad also has two strong freshman divers in Liv Mitchell and Mackenzie Peaseley. Peasley competed at the Riverside City College High School Invitational on Saturday, March 21, and scored 322.05 points earning an automatic qualification for CIF.

At the 43rd annual Mission Viejo Invitational on Saturday, March 28, Mitchell finished fourth with 456.95 points (School records and qualifies for CIF) and Peasley 27th with a score of 323.20.

In the pool, the varsity boys placed seventh overall at Mission Viejo. Varsity girls placed 13th overall with the combined team score placing 11th out of 41 teams.

Track & Field (1-0)

Breakers took their first league meet of the season defeating Costa Mesa on the Hulst Oval with the boys winning 74-48 and the girls 72.5 to 37.5. Breakers faced Saddleback on Thursday, April 2 and return to post spring break action on Thursday, April 16, at Estancia.

 

Boys Volleyball (5-3, 1-0)

Breakers 44th league campaign began on Thursday, March 26, with a 25-7, 25-17, 25-16 sweep of Costa Mesa (7-4, 0-1) at the Mustang gym for Laguna’s 59th straight league victory. Dane Olson led the attack with 14 kills while Tyler Alter had seven kills and four aces. Isaac Wullf added four kills, an ace and 26 assists. The team hit nearly a .500 on the day.

Breakers lead the all-time series with Mesa, 65-1. Complete scores and stats can be found on Max Preps.

This past week Laguna was at Saddleback (0-12) on Tuesday and hosted Estancia (7-7) on Thursday before taking off for spring break. The squad returns to the courts on Tuesday, April 14, when they host Calvary Chapel.

The lower level teams participated in tournaments last weekend. The JV lost in the finals of the Tesoro JV tournament losing 25-19 to Corona del Mar a reversal of last year’s finals. Breakers won their pool with Mission Viejo, Beckman, Dana, and Canyon before taking Los Alamitos and San Clemente for the spot in the finals.

Frosh Soph (9-3) participated in the 32-team Foothill tournament, finishing tied for third.
