Cross Country

The 2018 season got underway on Saturday, Sept. 1, as the teams participated in the 12th annual Great Cow Run in Cerritos. Laguna Boys finished 26th overall and well behind division rival Bishop Amat (15th). Laguna was missing a few of their top runners, including All-State performer Ryan Smithers, Zach Falkowski, Cal Neilson and Mateo Bianchi. Will Compton was the top Breaker runner with a 16:47.4 on the 3-mile course. Also scoring for Laguna were Tim Crawford, Tanner Burton, Charlie Dickerson and Ziggy Molter.

On the Girls side, Emily Engel was the top Laguna runner at 19:33 followed by Kaitlin Ryan, Coco Reed, Sara Jacobs and Angelina Dyrnaes. Breakers finished 14th overall but were missing their top runner, Jessie Rose.

This weekend the varsity runners will be dodging the urban hazards in San Francisco at the Lowell Invitational.

The Sunset League cluster meet is Tuesday, Sept. 25, at Huntington’s Central Park.

 

Girls Golf (1-2)

Aug. 29 at Tustin Ranch:  Crean Lutheran 230, Laguna 273. Breaker scores: Kennedy Roller – 51, Kenya Ripley-Dunlap – 55, Gigi DiMond – 55, Maya Vidas – 56, Jaden Shalala – 56, Claire Smithers  – 58.

This past week, Laguna had a pair of matches with Laguna Hills, and next week they play Valley on Monday, Fountain Valley on Tuesday, Samueli on Wednesday, and Corona del Mar Thursday.

 

Girls Tennis

Tennis opened on Sept. 4 at Dana Hills and the first home match is Friday Sept. 7 on the local courts.

Rick Conkey is back for his second season and the first year in the Sunset Wave League. Breakers have qualified for the playoffs the past 29 seasons and are 369-83 all-time in league play (24 titles), 92-27 in the playoffs with 11 section crowns.

 

Boys Sand Volleyball

Tryouts were held this week, rosters will post next week, and the first match is Tuesday, Sept. 11, when Laguna will face J Serra at the Newland Street courts in Newport. Match start time is either 2:30 or 3:30.

Girls Volleyball (2-4)

Piper Naess delivered 25 kills hitting an outstanding .561 as Laguna rallied to defeat Sage Hill 23-25, 25-20, 25-14, 25-19 at the Lightning Gym on Thursday, Aug. 30. Cambia Hall added 14 kills, Laguna recorded 8 aces and 71 digs. Top blocking honors went to Kendall Fraser with a solo block and five assists. Freshman Sophie Reavis recorded four kills on five attempts down the stretch and two blocks to help the visitors. Top diggers were Piper with 16 and Hallie Carballo with 16. Cambria Hall added 14 digs and Natalie Hagopian added 13 along with her 18 assists. Breakers lead the all-time series 5-2.

This past week, Breakers faced two good opponents at Foothill (13-3) on Wednesday and Edison (11-9) on Thursday. Next week, Laguna is at Corona del Mar (7-8) on Tuesday and will host Los Alamitos (7-3) at home on Thursday.

Boys Water Polo (1-0)

Breakers roared back from a 4-0 deficit on Thursday, Aug. 30, to stun OC #4 Santa Margarita 10-9 in the season opening game at the Santa Margarita pool. Colton Gregory scored three goals and frosh standout Logan McCarroll also tossed in three. Other scorers were James Nolan with two and scores by Zach Cord and Marshall Eichenauer. Gregory had three assists and Caden Capiobianco recorded seven saves. The JV lost 9-6 but the Frosh Soph won 5-3. This weekend, the Varsity is at the Eighth Annual Santa Barbara Invitational featuring 24 top teams from the North Coast, Central, San Diego and Southern Sections. Breakers are seeded 12th and opened Thursday with Righetti. Top seeds are Loyola, Mater Dei, and Campolindo.

Next week the Breakers will host two rare home games with Damien on Sept. 11 and Orange Lutheran on Wednesday, Sept. 12. Varsity action begins at the Community Pool at 4:15 p.m.
