Cross Country

Laguna’s cross country boys team set the record for a D4 school on the state course at Fresno’s Woodward Park during the 37th Annual Rough Rider Invitational. Top R-L: Cal Nielson Sebastian Fisher, William Compton, Logan Brooks, Mateo Bianchi, Daniel Kimball, Zach Falkowski and Ryan Smithers. Front: Coco Reed, Whitney Winefordner, Molly Cohn, Jessie Rose, Sierra Read, Audrey Sutton, Hannah Konkel, Morgan Falkowski, Angelina Dyrnaes, Emily Engel and Sydney Schaefgen.

Breaker squads traveled to central California to participate in the 37th Annual Rough Rider Invitational at Fresno’s Woodward Park State Meet Course. Laguna boys won the overall team title edging Livermore’s Granada High School with Sebastian Fisher as the Breaker’s top runner with a 15:46.10 time on the 5000-meter course. Also scoring for the Breakers were Ryan Smithers, Logan Brooks, Zachary Falkowski, and Mateo Bianchi. The team time set a course record for a D4 size school.

The girls team finished first among smaller schools with Hannah Konkel posting a 19:00.3 time on the course to lead the field. Menlo was second followed by Corondelet, Campolindo, Head Royce, and Lindsay. Other Laguna runners scoring for the Breakers were Jessie Rose, Sierra Reed, Morgan Falkowski, and Sidney Schaefgen.

Breakers boys are ranked #1 this week in SSCIF D4 while the girls are ranked #3. Laguna boys won CIF in 2009 and have finished second five times. Girls highest finish was second in 1992 and 2004. Girls have qualified for the team finals 15 straight years and the boys 19 straight seasons. Cross country divisions are still based on school enrollment and only the top 24 teams in each enrollment group advance to the SSCIF finals–quite a dynasty by our local runners=

Girls Golf (4-13, 0-6)

After years of success in the Orange Coast League, Laguna went winless in their first season in the ultra-competitive Sunset Wave League.

Oct. 11 @ Ben Brown’s: Laguna 215, Marina 207

Sarah Hollinshead – 39, Kenya Ripley-Dunlap – 42, Maya Vidas – 44, Claire Smithers – 45, Kennedy Roller – 45.

Girls Tennis (9-9, 4-0)

Breakers continued to surge in Sunset Wave League play extending their league win streak to 125 straight matches with a 10-8 win at Huntington Beach on Oct. 11 and a 15-3 victory over Marina on Oct. 16 on the local courts. The victory clinched at least a tie for the conference title, Laguna’s 13th-straight crown. Still they must win at least one remaining match against Edison (7-9, 2-2) on Oct. 18 or Huntington Beach (10-6, 2-2) here on Oct. 22 to clinch a post-season opportunity. Losing both will force a playoff to advance to the playoffs and since an at-large spot only is available to a .500 record or better teams – Breakers must finish first or second in league to qualify. Against Huntington Beach, key wins came from Ansley Beresford in singles and two wins each by doubles teams Megan Mindte/Vanessa Gee and Jessa Chaney/Camille Deckey.

Girls Volleyball (14-12, 5-1 – League Champs)

Breakers Seeded #2 in D3 Playoffs

In recognition of their tough schedule, Breakers were surprised with a second seed in the D3 playoffs, which was announced last Saturday after spending much of the season unnoticed by the coaches’ poll for the division. Like last season, Laguna opened the playoffs hosting Murrieta Mesa (13-10) on Oct. 18 at Dugger Gym. The Rams are a very good team from the ultra-competitive Southwestern League with a deceiving record. Three of the league schools for ranked in the top 16 and are in the D1 playoffs and two teams are in the D2 bracket.

Should the Breakers advance, the next few rounds will be easier. Second round is Saturday, quarters on Oct. 24, and semifinals on Oct. 27. Finals are on Nov. 3. Laguna’s D3 playoff bracket details are at www.cifss.org.

Last week the squad concluded the regular season with a non-league match on October 11 at Capistrano Valley after being bumped from home due to College Roundup. The Cougars offered little resistance with the Breakers winning 25-19, 25-21, 25-17 for their 16thwin in the 17 match series. Cambria Hall led with 16 kills followed by Piper Naess with 14 and 20 digs. Sophie Reavis (Fr) looked sharp at middle while Ella Tyus banked out seven kills. Natalia Hagopian and Soren Patchell split the setting duties.

Boys Water Polo (12-9, 2-2)

Breakers battled Newport Harbor, the nation’s top high school team, for the inaugural Sunset Surf League title on Oct. 10, at Corona del Mar’s pool. William Kelly got the Breakers on the scoreboard early with a score off a great pass by Colton Gregory followed by two scores by Logan McCarroll including a five-meter penalty shot. Breakers held a 3-2 lead after one period but the depth and power of the Tars (21-1) tied the contest at 4 after two periods then slowly built a lead to win 8-4 and clinch the title. Breakers now must knock off Corona del Mar this past Wednesday or Huntington Beach next week to finish second in the four-team league. On Saturday, the Breakers defeated Palos Verdes 12-10 behind four goals by Will Clark and three by Colton Gregory. Caden Capobianco recorded 12 saves in the non-league contest played at the loser’s pool.

This weekend Laguna is top seed in the 32-team Steve Pal Tournament being played at Beckman, Corona, Villa Park and Yorba Linda pools. Laguna opened play on Oct. 19 with Malibu at the Beckman pool.

SSCIF Rankings as of Oct. 15:

1 – Newport Harbor, 2 – Loyola, 3 – Harvard-Westlake, 4 – Oaks Christian, 5 – Mater Dei, 6 – Santa Margarita, 7 – San Clemente, 8 – Laguna Beach, 9 – Woodbridge, 10 – Palos Verdes, 11 – Dana Hills, 12 – Mira Costa, 13 – Damien, 14 – Foothill, 15 – Corona del Mar, 16 – Dos Pueblos, 17 – Murrieta Valley, 18 – Redlands East Valley, 19 – Huntington Beach, 20 – Orange Lutheran.

The top 8 teams for the Division 1 playoffs will be finalized on Oct. 26 and all D1 squads will qualify for the State Regional Tournament after the section playoffs conclude. The remaining qualified teams will participate in the D2 playoffs. The less competitive teams are already assigned to divisions 3-7.
