High School Sports Update

Boys Basketball (4-3)

Laguna went 2-3 as the defending champion of the Godinez tournament last week in action at the Godinez Gym and Irvine High School. The opening game on Nov. 26 saw Laguna drop a tough 60-56 game to Capo Valley Christian, followed two days later with a 65-59 win over Foothill. On Thursday, Nov. 29, San Clemente ran past the Breakers 61-49 in the 54th meeting between the two schools. The following day, the Breakers defeated Capo Valley 47-41, also at the Irvine gym. In the final tournament game, Breakers fell to Fullerton 49-48 as Lucas Kravitz hit a 3-point shot with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game, but the Breakers were unable to regain possession for a final shot. Through seven games, Nolan Naess is averaging 19.7 points per game and Kravitz at 12.9 per game scoring. Breakers hosted Dana Hills this past Wednesday in a non-league game and will be at Capo Valley Christian next week.

 

Girls Basketball (10-0)

Breakers continue to pile up the Division 5 victories, taking down Lennox MST 48-15 on Nov. 26 in Los Angeles, Summit View West 55-10 on Nov. 28 in Laguna, 50-14 over Tarbut V’Torah at the Irvine school’s gym on Dec. 2, and a 37-14 win over Brethren Christian at home on Dec. 4. Anna Cheng and Mia Pitz continue to be the scoring punch for the squad averaging in double figures. Maddy Garwal is averaging over 11 rebounds per game. First big test is Century at home on Dec. 13.

 

Boys Soccer (0-1)     

Laguna lost to Dana last Friday 3-1 and played at JSerra this past Wednesday. They host Beckman on Friday, Dec. 7. Five more matches are on the schedule before the holiday break.

 

Girls Soccer (2-3-1)

Ben Helm’s squad suffered a pair off losses last week 2-0 to Tesoro on Nov. 26 and 5-0 to Capo Valley on Nov. 29 but rebounded last weekend with a 5-0 win over Cantwell Sacred Heart and 1-0 over Godinez. The wins were played at Ocean View in their annual tournament. On Monday, tournament play concluded with a tough 1-0 loss to Rosary, one of the better Trinity League teams.

 

Girls Water Polo (1-0)         

The nation’s #1 team opened their 2019 season with a 22-3 victory over SSCIF #19 Murrieta Valley in a contest played on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at the Laguna Community Pool. Scoring started early as Laguna took advantaged of two consecutive power play opportunities as Molly Renner opened the scoring off a pass by Nicole Struss and less than a minute later Morgan Van Alphen tallied a goal from a pass by Renner. Sixteen players saw action with 11 different players scoring. Laguna faced #13 San Clemente this past Thursday and will play three matches next week: Coronado on Dec. 12, #7 San Marcos on the Dec. 16, and #2 Orange Lutheran on Dec. 15 at Santa Margarita’s pool.
