Breakers Open Against J Serra, CdM next week

Coach Raul Papaleo’s girls volleyball squad, ranked seventh in the county, struggled in their season opening match with a 17-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-20 victory over J Serra at the Lions gym this past Tuesday, Sept. 3.

Laguna was rolling with an 8-4 lead in set one but were out scored 21-9 mostly on unforced errors to hand victory to the hosts.  Breakers stormed back to a 9-4 lead in set two but still played down to the slower pace opponents. The third set was the crucial contest as Laguna could never shake the Lions until the final points. Alyse Ford was deadly down the final stretch with seven kills in nine swings to seal the set victory.

Laguna stormed to a 13-5 lead in the final set as Laguna substitutions helped close the score. Sabrina Stillwell dominated the final few plays to close out the win. Overall the Breakers served well with 14 aces but did not hit to their potential. Alyse Wallace Ford led with 23 kills, Stillwell added 11. Aspen Rocha dished out 23 assists while Taylor Cunningham had 17 in the 6-2 offense. Francie Holte had 28 digs with Ford and Stillwell collecting 11 apiece. Laguna hosted Santa Margarita on Sept. 5 and next week the Breakers travel to sixth-ranked Newport Harbor on Tuesday and host Corona del Mar (No. 8 in the county) on Thursday at Dugger Gym. Both matches should start about 5:30 p.m. after JV and as always are pressure matches to the teams involved.

Girls Tennis Underway

Coach Don Davis begins his third season at the helm this past week as Laguna participated in the Corona del Mar doubles tournament.  The first match was Thursday at Mission Viejo and the Breakers open at home next Tuesday, Sept. 10 with Northwood. The roster is 15 players with new additions Nina Bo, Josie Gosen, and Anna Heitmann, all seniors.

Returning players include (deniors) Nicole Doiron, Brooke Michaels, Sarah Nederlander, Stephanie Tat and Shawna Yang. (juniors )Kira Hamilton, Bialey Jaeger, Madeline Loomis and Olivia Morrison; (sophomores )Ashley Fair, Natasha Keces, and Ashley Shelton.

 

Boys Water Polo

Boys are starting the season at No. 7 in Orange County and open their season when they host Villa Park on Friday Sept. 13 at the local community pool.
