Highway Dodger Tells his Tale

Editor,

A few months ago, I was trying to walk across Coast Highway at Anita Street, toward the ocean side of the street. I looked south toward Cress Street and could see no cars going north. I looked north toward Thalia Street and there were no vehicles headed south.

As I walked across the street, at first I failed to notice a car turning left from Anita Street onto Coast Highway heading toward downtown Laguna. The car headed straight for me, as if I were invisible. I had to make a split second decision; jump on top of the hood to avoid being hit by the front of the car or try to dodge out of the way with my feet on the ground. I chose the latter, and as the car whizzed by me, I banged on the hood of the car and hollered out a few choice words at the driver. The driver paid no attention to me.

It might be said that you take your life into your hands when you cross Coast Highway.

  1. This is what you should expect will happen.
One short block north is a traffic signal at the intersection of Thalia and Pacific Coast Highway. If you are too bothered to walk 200 yards down the sidewalk to the crossing signal at the value of you own life, how do you find the time to complain? Real daredevil you are.

  2. Caltrans skirts their own safe-highways mandates, our self-promoting city manager defies the collision safety record while City Council chants “no my problem” pointing fingers at state agencies. There’s another election in 2018, until then replace the flags in those yellow buckets with wooden mallets.

  3. In the summer time our city hires 100 life guards because we do not want people to droned. Why are swimmers more valuable than people trying to cross the street. As a long range goal how difficult would it be for schools to train kids to cross the street and survive?
