About 60 people, including a significant contingent of Laguna Beach fire fighters and police officers, attended an hour-long ceremony today at Legion Hall marking the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States.

Earlier, firefighters marked the exact time of the attack with a procession downtown. And motorists should expect delays between 3:45 and 4:30 p.m. inbound on Laguna Canyon Road due to procession of motorcyclists also marking the occasion.

At Legion Hall, Third District County Supervisor Todd Spitzer recounted the number of lives lost that day and since in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and described Sept. 11 as this generation’s equal to Pearl Harbor. He urged those assembled to appreciate a country that grants due process to captured terrorists because of its Judeo-Christian values.

As police Capt. Jason Kravetz, fire Chief Kris Head and American Legion’s Diane Connell placed a memorial wreath in remembrance for those who perished 11 years ago, a bell tolled 11 times, once for each of the nation’s conflicts since 1776.
