Village Laguna will sponsor a coastal tour of Laguna Beach from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24 aboard the Ocean Institute’s research vessel Sea Explorer, casting off from 24200 Dana Point Harbor.

Take in the beauty of Laguna’s Marine Life Protected Area while guest speakers discuss the protected areas and the history of Laguna’s homes and architecture.

Tickets are $60 and include snacks and drinks. A portion of proceeds benefit the Laguna Bluebelt Coalition and the Marine Life Protected Areas.

Canyon Celebration Marks 25 Years

The Laguna Canyon Foundation celebrates their 25th anniversary with a bluegrass concert at the Nix Nature Center, 18751 Laguna Canyon Rd. from 3-6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25.

Reading Rewards With Burgers

Cover to Cover, the fall reading program at the Laguna Beach Public Library, will run through Nov. 14.

Kids 4-12 can start any time and will earn a certificate for a free In-n-Out burger if they read five books. Children can read up to 15 books and earn three burger coupons. Any kind of reading counts, including school assignments.

 

State Issues Traffic Safety Grant

The local police department received an $116,320 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety for a year-long program of special enforcements and public awareness efforts to prevent traffic related deaths and injuries.

The money will be used for DUI checkpoints, distracted driving enforcement, bike and pedestrian safety enforcement operations and motorcycle safety enforcement, said Lieutenant Jeff Calvert.

Members of the student auxiliary at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo have met the $25,000 pledge they made last April in support of the hospital’s new Neuroscience and Spine Institute.

Their next $25,000 pledge will support Laguna’s Mission Hospital Behavioral Health Program.

Student volunteers welcome visitors at the information desks, assist in delivering  meals to patients and support patient registration and discharge.

 

 

 

 

Downtown Businesses Prepare for High Water

The city is holding its third annual flood prevention device practice installation day Monday, Oct. 26.

FEMA encourages participation in the voluntary educational emergency preparedness-training event.

Employees and owners of businesses located in the flood hazard zone should practice installation of the prevention devices and register for AlertOC .

 

Pet Lovers Assist Animal Rescue

While two legged companions slurped bowls of spicy chili, furry sidekicks strutted their stuff at Laguna’s 19th Annual Pet Parade & Chili Cook Off, sponsored by the Laguna Board of Realtors & Affiliates’ Charitable Assistance Fund last month.

Proceeds will benefit Blue Bell Foundation for Cats, Laguna Beach Animal Shelter, the board’s Charitable Assistance Fund, The Pacific Marine Mammal Center, The Pet Rescue Center and Rescuing Unwanted Furry Friends.

Chili judges included Craig Cannole, Zack Krone, Jason Kravetz, John Pieteg, and Zack Fillers, who choose Team Laguna for first place best chili and booth. Other judges, including Laura Farinelli, Dr. James Levin, Dr. Susan Davis, Sandra Truelove and Zack Fillers made decisions in the pet parade category.
