How About Repurposing Historic Theater as a Public Venue?

Editor,

The free September Sunset Serenades in Heisler Park could benefit from an indoor site as a public or private and public partnership. Why not repurpose the closed South Coast theatre so the city and new owner (when or if there is one) could create a multi-dimensional venue for performance and visual art, film and animation? It would bring new energy, events and participation and serve as a place to serve civic groups.

There is enough room and built in flexibility to use this historic site for small conventions and large meetings like TED talks and other lectures in the most public area and heart of downtown.

Our community would greatly benefit from such a space and it could house both historic theatre memorabilia and show off new ideas.

Staffing could also be a community partnership between the high school, LCAD, FOA and community groups, even paid internships through rental fees.

A general obligation bond to invest and fund this as a public community project is not unheard of, just as Main Beach had, or through grants  or other partnering solutions.

Its iconic structure has a rich history and should be restored and functional with the art-oriented spirit and needs of Laguna Beach first.
