Laguna College of Art & Design is launching Project GREEN (Green Restoration and Ecological Education Now), a new curriculum from coursework in the sciences.

Funded by a grant from the Laguna Beach-based Marisla Foundation, this one-of-a-kind program goes outside the traditional campus “box” to push students toward making the environment and the community a better place.

The Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, which surrounds LCAD’s campus on three sides and dominates the local landscape, was the first target of the program last fall. Students documented and removed invasive non-native species, re-planted and restored traversed areas (such as off-trail bike paths), and created campaigns and art to educate the public.

The next phase of the program, Project GREEN: Oceans, will launch this summer, and other classes are in the planning stages as the protect taps into the creative energies and talents of the student body and instructors to find ways to help LCAD actively and directly affect the environment.
