In Search of Splinter Festival Info

Editor,

I lived in South Laguna in the ‘60s, but have lived in Connecticut since September, 1968.  I was born Olivia Marin and I grew up in Southern California. In 1968, I joined a group of artists in an art festival that ran in conjunction with the Festival of Arts and the Sawdust Festival in the canyon. Ours was on a lot on Coast Highway  near and on the same side of the road as the Cottage Restaurant. We were the Sawdust Splinter Festival.

I searched the Internet and came up virtually empty with any information about that year. I take it there is no more Splinter Festival. I know we were born because there were a lot of us wanting to exhibit, and back then the art we did was realism and traditional, and we felt uncomfortable being in an art festival that had “light shows,” etc.!  Obviously the original Festival of Arts was too restricted with space to allow all of us in to exhibit as well.

I met my future husband at the Splinter Festival on Sunday, Aug. 11, 1968. I noticed that those art festivals have become big and are open to visitors more than just a few weeks in the summer.

My husband passed away last June, a victim of Alzheimer’s. I’m about to write a story about how we met, and what I’m interested in is to find out the dates that festival ran in 1968. I’m going to search for my old flyer with the artist’s names listed; so far, I’m batting zero. Perhaps some of the current artists in the Laguna area were around back then and might remember, or perhaps this information is somewhere in town.

I’m hoping you can help me out.  Thanks, I’d really appreciate it.
