Poncho Sanchez fans will especially enjoy Jazz Wednesdays’ Aug. 12, concert that features trombonist Francisco Torres, the lead trombonist and musical director for the Grammy winning Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band.

Torres, a trombonist and composer, is at home with jazz, classical, Latin, funk, reggae and ska.

His group performs at The Ranch patio overlooking Aliso Canyon, 31106 S. Coast Highway, 6-8 p.m. Doors open at 5 and tickets are $17 in advance and $22 at the door.

Dinner is available for $26.50 or $30 at the door.

Fete de la Musique’s Hot Act Returns in Concert

The band that created such a stir at this year’s Fete de la Musique returns to Laguna Beach in concert on Saturday, Aug. 22, during the Blue Water Music Festival Concert Series.

Blues Brothers Rock Laguna

Look for “Soul Man,” “Rubber Biscuit,” Gimme Some Lovin’,” and more at “The Blues Brothers Revue,” which opens at Laguna Playhouse Thursday, Aug. 13, and will run through Sunday, Aug. 20.

The live concert featuring Wayne Catania as Jake and Kieron Lafferty as Elwood, combines comedy and hits from the original movie and pays homage to Chicago’s history of blues, gospel and soul music.

“Jake and Elwood and an extraordinary band will bring our audiences a hand-clapping, foot-stomping, stand-up-and-cheer, not-to-be-missed good time,” said Ann Wareham, artistic director.

Hancock Cooks Up a New Album

Local resident and musician Nate Hancock has released his new single and music video, “What I Got Cookin’ Up,” from his upcoming full length album, “No Place Quite Like Home” on Modern Roots Music.

With musical inspiration from Mississippi blues and soul gospel, this new single is the first of nine new songs.

Filmmaker Focuses on National Parks

Award-winning actor Robert Redford narrates “National Parks Adventure,” the latest 3-D movie from Laguna Beach-based MacGillivray Freeman Films.

The film is scheduled for release next Feb. 12, coinciding with the centennial of the National Park Service next year.

Told from the perspective of world-class mountaineer Conrad Anker, his stepson Max Lowe, an adventure photographer and family friend Rachel Pohl, the film takes viewers to spectacularly wild and beautiful places. “We shot in 30 national parks over a nine month period,” says producer Shaun MacGillivray.
