JFK, the Beatles and Ali

Editor,

Growing up in the 1950s, I remember hearing people say you don’t discuss religion in public. Well, 1960 presidential candidate John F. Kennedy was a Catholic. John Lennon said the Beatles were bigger than Jesus. And Cassius Clay changed his name and converted to Islam.

All three confronted the war in Vietnam. JFK said he planned to reduce American forces there in his second term. Lennon and girlfriend, Yoko Ono, held peaceful “bed-ins” and heavyweight champ Muhammad Ali refused induction. Each was great, but we all know who The Greatest was.

RIP Muhammad. In and out of the ring, yours was a life well lived.
