Laguna Beach police named Officer Brian Griep and Det. Brandon Drake as the Officers of the Year respectively for 2020 and 2021 during a ceremony in the Council Chambers on May 27.

Likewise, Jailer Moses Rodriguez was named as the agency’s 2020 Civilian of the Year and Mariann Tracy, executive assistant to the police chief, was named 2021 Civilian of the Year. All of the honorees were selected by their peers.

In a prepared statement, Drake said it was the highest honor to be selected by his friends and colleagues.

“I vividly recall being a newer officer and having more questions than answers about law enforcement. I was fortunate to have experienced and intelligent mentors who helped develop me into the officer I am today. As I reflect on those memories, I push myself to pay it forward by contributing towards the development of our newer officers,” Drake said.

As one of two Laguna Beach officers dedicated to handling nuisance behavior by the homeless population, Griep worked closely with Friendship Shelter staff in getting many individuals housed during the pandemic.

“It is with great pride that I serve the citizens of Laguna Beach. As a Community Outreach Officer, I rely considerably on assistance from others in performing my duties. My success is due mainly to the unwavering support I enjoy from my peers and community partners. I am humbled by the nomination and honored to be recognized among this team of exceptional officers,” Griep said.
