The 12thannual LBHS Athletic Awards were quietly announced on Thursday, June 7, during the school day in a small ceremony at Turner Library. The Athlete of the Year awards went to two standouts, Lexi McKeown and Blake Burzell.
The other recipients are:
Coachoftheyear, Bret Fleming, Boys Basketball.
ScholarAthletes, Sterling Butler, soccer, Thea Walsh, water polo and swimming.
FemaleAthleteofCharacter, Kyla Whitelock, swimming, water polo.
MaleAthleteof Character, Kyle Sharp, golf.
FemaleAthleteoftheYear, Alexandra McKeown, sand volleyball, volleyball.
Male Athlete of the Year, Blake Burzell, basketball, baseball.
Lexi competed in indoor volleyball where she was first team All CIF and second team all-county this past season then went on to the sand volleyball season where she led Laguna to the So Cal finals and also was a member of the individual pairs So Cal championship team.
Lexi will be attending Florida State next season on a Division 1 Sand Volleyball scholarship.
Burzell re-wrote the boys basketball record book, shattering many marks that had stood for over 50 years. He did the same in baseball, setting a number of career pitching marks in a four-year varsity career. Blake will be attending Arizona State in the fall and will play baseball.
Fleming in his 23rdseason was honored as the Coach of the Year for having one of the finest seasons (26-4) in the 84 years of the sport at Laguna.Firebrand Media LLC wants comments that advance the discussion, and we need your help to accomplish this mission.
