The Men’s 61st Annual Laguna Open was held Saturday and Sunday all along Main Beach. Local favorites Chase Frishman and Mike Brunsting beat out Miles Evans and Spencer McClachlin of Torrance and Hermosa Beach in a thrilling three game final to bring home the title to a Laguna team for the first time since 2005’s win by local Ty Loomis.
Twenty-eight teams battled in a double elimination format with the finals stretching until 6 p.m. Sunday night.
Tournament sponsors were essential to the success of the tournament, providing the prize money for the pro athletes.
Title sponsors The Deck on Laguna Beach, Driftwood Kitchen and Pacific Edge Hotel led the pack which also included Tropare, Firebrand Media, Hobie, Olukai, Nesquik, Laguna Veterinary Services, Performance Chiropractic, A Slim Me Medspa, Solar City, Robin Hiers Art, Sourced Cuisine, The Inn at Laguna, Plastics Clothing, Mago Hot Sauce, LagunaBeach.com, The Ranch at Laguna, High Brew Coffee, Fokus Pilates Studio, Volvic Water, and Tommy Bahamas.
Large and enthusiastic crowds enjoyed perfect weather and world-class volleyball on the five courts stretched out along Main Beach and literally squeezed into the only available spots.
The City of Laguna’s Public Works department and Community Services were instrumental in preparing the courts for play as the crew fought high tides and surf all weekend that threatened to wash out some of the courts.
It was touch and go until late Friday night as to whether there would be enough courts to contest the Open.
Other local teams included Dovsek / Johnson finishing 17th and Kormeluk / Kormeluk & Molina /Alden finishing 25th.
