LBHS Football: Records Smashed in Rout of Glenn 74-19

Andres DelaRosa’s interception in the second quarter where the junior ran 36-yards for a touchdown.

Laguna (2-0-1) buried Glenn High School (1-3) Thursday , Sept. 13, at historic Excelsior Field in Norwalk. Breakers scored on their first six possessions while defense and special teams set a school record with five touchdowns including three second half scores after building a record-tying 55-0 halftime mark.

Laguna took the opening possession marching 69 yards in seven plays to score with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first period. Laguna then held the Eagles to a minus six yards before scoring their second touchdown on a one-play 49-yard run by Nathan Lancaster. The point-after-touchdown was disallowed after Robbie McInerny took a bouncing snap and tossed a two-point conversion try that the opponents tipped into the waiting arms of Michael Sofferman. He  was ruled to be an ineligible receiver down field in the broken play.

Nathan Lancaster, league champion in track sprints last spring, is making a big impact in football. The junior running back scored two touchdowns including a 74-yard punt return, the 10th longest in school history.

Laguna’s third touchdown was on a two-play drive with the last touchdown of the period occurring when a Glenn punt was apparently rolling dead on the Eagle 36-yard line where Drake Martinez raced up and took the ball off the ground  in front of a lax punt defense crew to out run the defenders to the end zone.

Laguna’s first score of the second quarter came on a two-play drive that was set up by a 21-yard kickoff return by Robert Clemons. Larry Stewart ran 26 yards before Martinez finished the drive with a sideline run for the score.

Andres DelaRosa snagged a pass for the seventh score after Laguna freely substituted on defense, which allowed the Eagles to drive 45-yards on a long 15-play drive before giving up the ball on downs. One play is all it took for Martinez to break a 27-year old record for the longest run from scrimmage in Laguna history.  Laguna had one more possession in the period but the bench was unable to score.

Adam Lythgoe (23), Michael Sofferman (61) and Joseph Casey (62) in action against Glenn High.

Breakers scored twice in the third period on a punt return and interception. The final score that set the all-time scoring record occurred on the final play of the game when the Eagle runner, Victor Sanchez coughed up the ball after a huge  Adam Lythgoe hit. L.G. Graves scooped up the ball and returned it to the surprise of the host school.  No PAT attempt was allowed and the game concluded.

Lythgoe’s hit created the opportunity for Laguna’s 11th touchdown, tying the school record set in 1945 when Adam’s grandfather, Tom Dugger, participated in the 70-0 win over Capistrano.

Up next:  St Margaret’s (3-0) 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21 at Guyer Field. This is the first meeting between Laguna and the Tartans and should be a real test for Laguna stopping a very skilled offensive and the Breaker offense having to challenging a good stiff defense – a tougher test than University.

Linemen Steven Harrison (54) and Spencer Anderson (64) play outsize roles in Laguna’s defense.
