Breakers Beat Edison, Lose to Los Alamitos

Boys Volleyball

Laguna split their matches, sweeping then #16 Edison 25-21, 25-22, 25-23 last Friday night before a large crowd at Dugger Gym. Andrew Reavis led the attack with 14 kills, while Enzo Sadler had a big night with 11 kills, and Geste Bianchi also chipped in 11. The visiting Chargers (12-8) led in all three matches until the end as the Breakers surged on a team effort for the sweep. This past Wednesday, The Breakers lost to #7 Los Alamitos 25-21, 25-21, 25-17 as they could not close out the first two sets like they did with Edison.

The initial Max Preps national rankings were released this week with Laguna at #28. League opponents Newport Harbor is #1, Huntington Beach is #11 and Corona del Mar is #18. Recent Laguna opponent Santa Margarita is #15 despite their home loss to the Breakers.

Looking ahead: Breakers play March 22 at Fountain Valley (8-8) and on March 27 at Marina. Surf League play opens March 29 at Huntington Beach.

Baseball (8-6, 1-0)

Cutter Clawson picked up the pitching win and hit a 3-run homer as the Breakers snapped their five-game losing string with an epic 7-4 victory over Newport Harbor to open Sunset Wave League play on March 15 on Newport’s field. Wesley Witteman provided the save facing seven batters in relief. The win is only the fourth ever in the 79-year, 21-game series with the Tars, with the previous wins coming in 1940, 1986, and 1994.

Breakers host Wave League member Marina on March 20 in only their second meeting ever with the Vikings and renew their rivalry with Corona del Mar on March 22. Breakers are 13-34 with the Sea Kings over the past 56 years the two schools have played each other.

 

Boys Golf (4-2)

Laguna lost a non-league match 228-192 to Newport Harbor this past Tuesday on the Mesa Linda course at Costa Mesa CC, par 35. Medalist was Campbell Norris from Newport, who shot a one under par 34.

Lacrosse

Laguna Boys (0-6, 0-2) dropped their initial Sunset League contests, losing 14-1 on March 15 at Huntington Beach and 19-0 at Los Alamitos on March 19. The girls team (0-3, 0-2) finally had a full squad on March 19, losing a non-league match to Rosary 15-7.

 

Softball (4-6, 0-1)

Laguna split their tournament games played last Saturday, dropping a 5-4 decision to Corona del Mar in the morning before picking up a 10-9 victory over La Sierra in the afternoon. On March 19 Laguna opened Wave League play dropping a 16-1 contest to Newport Harbor on the Thurston field.

 

Swimming

Laguna faced their first of three Wave League dual meets on March 13 at Laguna with the boys losing to Marina 92-76, but the Laguna girls swamped the Vikings 121-49.

Laguna also swam two non-league dual meets with the boys losing to Los Alamitos 138-28 on March 15 and 107-62 to Fountain Valley on March 19. The girls also lost to Los Alamitos 128-37 and to Fountain Valley 89-81.

The remaining league dual meets are April 2 at Huntington Beach and April 4 hosting Edison at the Laguna pool.

 

Boys Tennis (4-7, 0-1)

Laguna lost to Huntington Beach 12-6 on March 14 and to Corona del Mar 17-1 on March 19. Their final non-league match with the Surf League is on March 21 at Fountain Valley (8-3). Laguna will resume Wave League play on March 26 at Newport Harbor.

 

Track & Field

Laguna had two non-league track dual meets this season with the boys losing to Edison 114-20 on March 13 and to Corona del Mar 89-24 on March 20. The girls narrowly lost to Edison 67-64 and to Corona del Mar 73-36. The Sunset Wave league dual meet is March 27 with Newport Harbor, Marina, and Huntington Beach at the Hulst Oval/Guyer Field. The 50th trophy meet was successfully held on March 16 at Laguna with Peter Herold from JSerra winning the feature contest, the Hulst 3200 run with a 9:02.53 mark. Laguna athletes Ryan Smithers and Sebastian Fisher were among the top runners in the ultra-fast race.

 

Girls Sand Volleyball (7-0)

Breakers continue to roll in Sand Volleyball action.

On Wednesday, March 13, both Varsity and JV played against JSerra in the OCBVL with a 7-0 win.
