Breakers Surprise Newport Again, League Race Tied

Baseball (9-8, 2-2)

Jeremy Hayes drove in four runs with a grand slam home run to spark the Breakers to a 9-6 victory over Newport Harbor this past Wednesday, March 27, at Skipper Carrillo Field. Coupled with Corona del Mar’s 1-0 win over Marina, the four Sunset Wave League schools are now all tied at 2-2 after four league contests with only five league games remaining for each school. Breakers conclude their Newport series on March 29 then conclude their Marina and Corona del Mar contests after Spring Break.

Last week Laguna extended Corona del Mar two extra innings before falling 3-2 at the CdM diamond. On Tuesday, March 20, they lost to Marina 9-7 in another close Wave League contest.

Top hitters so far this season are Kolton Freeman at .346 average with 18 hits, and Cutter Clawson at .333 average and 17 hits. Both batters have hit five home runs this season. Clawson is the leading pitcher at 4-1 with a 2.13 ERA in 26 innings of work. Complete statistics are posted on Max Preps.

Boys Golf (4-5)

Breakers faced the Sunset Surf League teams in non-league action starting on March 20 with Corona del Mar at Aliso Viejo CC, playing the front 9 par 35 course. The Sea Kings (7-0) outshot the Breakers 175-211. Scoring for Laguna were Gus Morck – 40, Chase Gioffredi – 40, Aiden Svenson – 43, Tai Diggins – 43 and Jameson Roller – 45.

On March 26, the Varsity played Huntington Beach at Meadowlark GC, par 35 with the Oilers winning the match 177-224. Medalist was freshman Edwin Lam from HB, who shot 30 (-5).  Senior Chase Gioffredi was low score for Laguna with a 38 (+3). Other Laguna scores included Kyle Shaw – 44, Tai Diggins – 44, Jameson Roller – 47, Cade St. Clair – 51 and Trent Ralston – 51.

Breakers concluded their non-league play on March 27, losing to Edison 202-179 at Aliso Viejo CC. Laguna player scores: Gus Morck – 37, Aiden Svenson – 39, Chase Gioffredi – 39, Trent Ralston – 42 and Kyle Shaw – 45. This was the Breakers best team day for the season.

Sunset Wave League play starts on April 3 with Los Alamitos and April 4 with Fountain Valley. Play resumes after Spring Break with Marina on April 11 to conclude the first round.

Lacrosse

Laguna Boys (0-7, 0-3) were crushed 22-0 by Corona del Mar (9-0, 4-0) on March 22. Breakers best chance for a league win will be April 3 at Marina. The girls team (0-5, 0-2) lost a non-league game at Canyon in Anaheim Hills 15-7 on March 26.

Softball (4-6, 0-1)

Laguna split their tournament games played last Saturday, dropping a 5-4 decision to Corona del Mar in the morning before picking up a 10-9 victory over La Sierra in the afternoon. On March 19, Laguna opened Wave League play dropping a 16-1 contest to Newport Harbor on the Thurston field.

Swimming

Laguna concludes their league dual meets next week at Huntington Beach on April 2 and hosting Edison on April 4.

Boys Tennis (5-8, 1-1)

Breakers concluded their non-league schedule with a 16-2 loss to Fountain Valley but returned to Wave League play crushing Newport Harbor 14-4 on the local courts this past Tuesday, March 27. Mason Lebby, Laguna’s #1 singles player, swept his matches with the Tars 6-4, 6-2, 6-0. Breakers also took eight of the nine doubles matches.

The team takes on Marina on March 28 and then will face Edison in a rematch for the league title on April 2 on the Charger courts in Huntington Beach. League play concludes late next week at Newport on April 4 and at Marina on Friday, April 5.

Track & Field

Laguna hosted a Wave League cluster dual meet on March 27, with the Boys losing to Newport Harbor 74-56, Marina 83-43, but edging Huntington Beach 562.5 to 61.5. Marina (5-1, 3-0) won the Boys Sunset Wave League dual meet title.

Breakers meet winners were:

800 M run – Mateo Bianchi 2:00.84

1600M run – Sebastian Fisher 4:23.01

4 x 400 Relay – Jack Pigott, Casey Sorensen, Kai Ball and Kai Malm 3:37.05

On the girls side, Newport defeated Laguna 81-44, Marina defeated Laguna 76-50, but the Breakers crushed Huntington 79-47. Newport won the team title.

200 M dash – Majia Shaw 26.23

400 M dash – Majia Shaw 59.59

4 x 100 Relay – Shaw, Ella Dartz, Shanai Auguis, and Riley Russo 50.73

Boys Volleyball (10-4)

Breakers won a pair of non-league matches with a 25-19, 25-15, 25-23 win over Fountain Valley at Dugger Gym on Friday, March 22, followed by an even easier sweep of Marina 25-14, 25-16, 25-23 on Wednesday, March 27. Sunset Surf League play opens on Friday, March 29, at Huntington Beach (18-4). Next week the Breakers host the nation’s #1 team, Newport Harbor (26-0) on Wednesday, April 3, with the start time about 5:30 p.m. On Friday, April 5, Laguna travels to Corona del Mar (14-4) for the final match of the first round. Season will resume after Spring Break on April 19 with the Sea Kings at Dugger Gym.

The Sunset Surf League is only four teams, with first and second place receiving automatic playoff spots, while the third and fourth place teams must have a .500 overall record to be considered for an at-large spot.

The 34th Annual Alumni game is slated for Friday, April 26, at Dugger Gym and will include Senior Night and a tribute to honor the late Rolf Engen, who was instrumental in the success of the program in the 1970s.

Girls Sand Volleyball (8-0)

Varsity pulled out an unusually close 4-3 win vs. San Clemente last Wednesday:

1s: Peri Brennan & Piper Naess won 21-14, 21-10

2s: Hallie Carballo & Cambria Hall won 21-15, 21-10

3s: Soren Patchell & Jackie Strawn lost 17-21, 19-21

4s: Bella Mullin & Mikayla Smith lost 16-21, 16-21

5s: Ella Tyus & Amelie Sadler lost 15-21, 21-18, 11-15

4v4: Brennan, Naess, Carballo, Hall won 28-23

JV was on the losing side of another good 4-3 battle suffering their first loss of the season:

This past week, Laguna faced Saddleback Valley, JV played Los Alamitos on Wednesday, and on Thursday, March 28, the Varsity met St. Joseph/Lakewood and Long Beach Poly in IVBL play.
