Summer campers observed a pair of humpback whales leaping out of the water and waving their flukes about two miles offshore Laguna Beach on Tuesday.

The Ocean Institute in Dana Point offers whale-watching trips for school children during the week and for the general public on weekends onboard its RV Sea Explorer, said spokesman Jim Graves.

Humpback whale sightings are rare off the Orange County coastline, according to Captain Mike Bursk, who told the children they were lucky to see such a sight.
