Laguna Beach’s Michael Lewis won the Formula 3 Italia rookie championship series in Monza, Italy, by a convincing margin of 10 seconds over second-place driver Sergio Campana.

As a result, Lewis earned the opportunity to test drive a Ferrari Formula 1 race car at the Vallelunga Circuit next month.

After the win on Saturday, and earning points for both qualifying and fastest lap of Race 1, Lewis was now in striking distance to go for the overall series championship.

By lap five Lewis took the lead in the race with a two-second lead over second-place driver Victor Guerin. With just two laps remaining, Lewis entered a turn and hit the berm with the right rear wheel, which damaged the suspension. Unaware of the damage, the car did not turn as expected when Lewis next braked. He slid off the track, ending his chance at the overall series championship.

“I came into this series as a rookie and I learned so much about how to race and how to work with brilliant people, so the season was good for me,” Lewis said.
