LOCA Arts Education invites art lovers to its monthly Art Club on Thursday, Feb. 15, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the LCAD Gallery downtown on Ocean Avenue.

Painters Betty Haight, Kathy Jones, and Stephanie Cunningham will speak on collaboration. Attendees will be invited to watch or take part in chain-drawing, where each player draws a connected portion of a figure but conceals it before passing it to the next player.

LOCA members are admitted free. Guests and visitor admission is $20 per person. Advance registration is requested at 949 363-4700.

Art College Lifts the Curtain on a New Work

New mural “Upside Downtown” to installed at LCAD.

Laguna College of Art and Design will unveil, “Upside Downtown,” a new mural by alumnus and fine arts faculty member, Timothy Robert Smith, on Monday, Feb. 12.

The 10’x33’ mural will embellish the school’s East Campus, 2265 Laguna Canyon Road.

Smith initiated the project by asking LCAD President, Jonathan Burke, if he’d like to replace an older mural that had been in place for many years.

His proposal was accepted and, over the summer, he and 10 LCAD students were given a painting studio on LCAD’s Main Campus in which to create the mural. “We have so many talented painters at LCAD, not just in the drawing and painting major, but in illustration, game art and animation, too,” he said. “Though everyone has a slightly unique painting style, it was gratifying to see all these different personalities come together to create one cohesive image.”

Burke selected Smith’s dramatic multi-perspective style because it symbolizes LCAD’s commitment to infusing observation and description with a creative and contemporary sensibility, a statement from the college says.
