Nine year-old Laguna Beach resident Everett Capelle captured the gold medal in the boys’ 9-10 year-old division 1500-meter race with a time 4:56:70 at the National Youth Outdoor Championships held last month in Lisle, Ill.

Everett also brought home a fourth place medal for his 800-meter performance.

His brother Calvin Capelle medaled in his events also by finishing among the top eight in the boys’ 11-12 year-old division for the 800-meter, 1500-meter and 3000-meter races.

Hundreds of youth athletes aged 7 to 18 years-old from around the country compete in this annual track and field event, which typically produces several youth national records.

Everett won the national 1500 m race last year when he set a new national record in the boys’ 8-and-under division with a time of 5:09:44. Calvin holds several Laguna Beach city track records in the 100m, 200m, 400m, and 800m.

Both brothers train under Coach Darren Phelps with the South Orange County Wildcats Youth Track Club and look forward to racing with the team in this fall’s cross-country season.
