Laguna Beach resident and budding composer R. Lance Montgomery took top honors in the best composition category at the Television Academy Foundation’s 32nd annual College Television Awards on April 9.
Montgomery won for the musical score he wrote that was used in the Brigham University-submitted animated short, “DreamGiver,” which was performed by the BYU Philharmonic.
The academy recognizes the best student-produced film, digital and video productions from around the country. Montgomery’s winning submission was selected from more than 500 students from 154 schools who entered the competition across 11 categories. Montgomery also received an honorable mention in music at the 2009 CTAs.
“DreamGiver is a very dynamic short story that required a complex musical score, a challenge I couldn’t let pass by,” said Montgomery. He also gave credit to Brigham Young University’s philharmonic, conducted by Kory Katseanes, which performed and recorded the score and “brought the music to life.”
In addition to cash awards ranging from $2,000 to $500 for the three top honorees, winners were invited to a private mentoring sessions with industry professionals. Some winning pieces will also be featured on mtvU.com.
