The Sunshine Readers, founded by Julia Johnson of Laguna Beach, were selected as philanthropy partner for the 2014 National Charity League Leadership Conference, held recently in Anaheim.
Johnson and her co-founder, daughter Candace, started Sunshine Readers 20 years ago. The travelling literacy program takes place in various Orange County public libraries and encourages young children to embrace reading and helps the teenaged readers refine their public speaking skills.
Many of the NCL Laguna Chapter’s teens have taken this passion for literacy with them to their college campuses and started Sunshine Readers program there. Since the program’s inception roughly 1,000 girls have participated in the program, giving over 2,500 “reads” at five south county public libraries.
