The public is invited to heap good wishes on the Boys & Girls Club’s finance director, Bali Thorn, at a retirement BBQ held in her honor at the club Friday, Aug. 10, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Thorn, who started as a secretary in 1979, has seen the club swell to 1,500 members from 250 over 33 years. She learned about the job opening from a little league coach and took the position to be close to home and her two children.

Along the way, many club kids have hung out in her office, playing with the calculator or petting her dog. The youth of the year awards night remains one of her favorite club events, along with BBQ day because of the camaraderie it serves up.

Thorn, a resident since 1972, formerly owned and operated the Laguna Beach Deli Company, a favorite of locals. “Bali is a special lady who appreciated her staff,” said club member and former deli employee Krissy Hauer.

Thorn, who intends to travel east to visit family, leaves behind a long list of accomplishments, including preparing budget projections accurate to within pennies. “Bali has been an incredible partner in strengthening our club,” said Executive Director Pam Estes. “Her profound contributions have and will make a meaningful difference in so many lives.”
