Don Handrick, who has been studying and teaching Buddhism for the past 20 years, will be giving a public talk “How To Be Happy” on Friday, Sept. 23, from 7-9 p.m. at the Neighborhood Congregational Church, 340 St. Ann’s Dr.

The following day, Saturday, Sept. 24, Handrick will lead a one-day retreat entitled “The Power of Forgiveness: Learning to Forgive Ourselves and Others.”

Handrick spent seven years studying to become a Western Buddhist teacher with Lama Zopa Rinpoche, the founder of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition.

He has spent a decade as a resident teacher at a Buddhist center in Santa Fe, along with teaching Buddhism at a local prison in New Mexico. He recently began teaching throughout the country.

“When we have difficulty ourselves, the goal is to be able to think of others, that there are many others in the same situation,” he said. “By wishing to end suffering for others, then we go through our own difficulties with a different point of view.”

The cost of Friday’s talk is $20 for the public and $10 for NCC members. Saturday’s retreat is $60 and $30 for NCC members.
