James Clay Garrison Holds Down Hotel Laguna

Local guitarist-vocalist James Clay Garrison performs at the Hotel Laguna Lounge every Friday from 7 – 10 p.m.

Garrison traces his musical influence to growing up in Spain where his father, an Air Force pilot, bought him a guitar with hopes he would become a flamenco guitarist. He did become a virtuoso guitarist and vocalist, recording his first album at age 15, touring with several bands and recording with Eddie Van Halen.

Today, the busy studio session musician also finds time to teach and mentor, including the “American Idol” contestant Andrew Bloom.

His set list spans a wide variety of styles and artists. Particularly notable is his cover of “Voodoo Child,” where his guitar and vocals mirror Jimi Hendrix. As Van Halen noted, “Now, that boy can sing.”

“I wanted to see what would happen when you bring two very different organizations together, one whose aesthetic is primarily focused on the greats of the classical canon, and another organization whose primary focus is music that is being created at this very moment,” said Allen Moon, artistic director of Santa Ana Sites, which presents contemporary performances in Santa Ana.
