Team “So Syncro” dodged their way to victory in the fourth-fifth grade division while “Trump This” was the popular choice for best costume at the sixth annual Schoolpower dodgeball tournament and fundraiser last week. This year’s tournament netted a record $13,000.

Champions from each division won $500 prize money to designate to a teacher or school program of their choice. The So Syncro team dedicated their winnings to El Morro fifth-grade teachers.

A record 65 teams competed in the high school gymnasiums, bouncing with 600 spirited players, coaches, volunteers, referees and scorekeepers, as well as countless roaring fans.

“The Dream Team” took first place in the sixth-eighth grade division, with the “Harlem Dodge Trotters” scoring best costume. Dream Team player Sara Jacobs explained their strategy. “Coach Rossi kept telling us, ‘You just have to win this one game.’ Turned out he was right! But winning was just the icing on the cake to a super fun experience.”

The adult division attracted teams from all over town, including teachers, high school football players, lifeguards, firemen and the event’s long-time sponsor Hobie Surf Shop. The El Morro teacher’s team “The Reapers” schooled the competition and defended their title by winning the adult division for the second year in a row. Best costume (and second place) went to PNH Technology.
