Andrew J. Brislen

Andrew J. Brislen

Andrew J. Brislen, “Drew,” a lifelong resident of the South Coast, drowned Thursday May 26, while free diving off Laguna Beach.

Drew was the son of popular Laguna Beach High School teacher Dee Brislen who died last October.

A native of Laguna Beach, Drew Brislen lived in Laguna Niguel through high school. He attended Dana Hills High School, where he played volleyball and waterpolo, and graduated in 1989.

He studied architecture at New Orleans’ Tulane University, where he earned his master’s degree.  He moved to San Clemente in the late 1990s. Brislen worked in architectural design and contracting in Laguna Beach, first for architect Chris Abel. For the last 15 years, Brislen worked for Abel’s son, Gregg, and always felt he was a part of the Abel family.

Brislen was an excellent skier, skeet shooter, surfer, swimmer, and scuba diver.  He also loved to kayak, climb trees, and do anything that was fun and interesting.

Brislen also traveled the world and enjoyed learning about people and their cultures.

He loved his friends and his family, especially his two little girls, Sage and Addie. He never stopped showing his love and dedication to his mother, who suffered for almost eight years from cancer.

Drew is survived by his wife, Michelle; daughters Sage and Addie; father, Andrew; and grandmother Bess Barker.

He will be missed by many.

A paddle out was set for Brislen at 7:30 a.m. at San Clemente’s North Beach, on Thursday, June 2; a service follow at 4 p.m. also in San Clemente at Ole Hansen Beach Club.
