Village Laguna invites the public to get to know the candidates running for City Council in November at a 7 p.m. forum Tuesday, Aug. 28, at City Hall.
The public is asked to arrive at 6:45 p.m. as the program will begin at precisely 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Cox Channel 30.
City council candidates Steve Dicterow, Jane Egly, Verna Rollinger, Robert Ross and Robert Whalen will take questions from participating members of the local media. Barbara Diamond of the Coastline Pilot, Andrea Adelson of the Laguna Beach Independent, Stu Saffer of StuNews Laguna and Claudia Koerner of the Laguna News-Post are participating. The panel will be moderated by Village Laguna’s John Monahan.
The Laguna Beach Alliance for the Arts will also hold a forum for council candidates on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Laguna Playhouse in the Moulton Theater. The public is cordially invited to attend and pose arts-related questions to.
The discussion will be moderated by Greg Vail, president of the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association. Space is limited and will be filled on a first-come-first- served basis. LBaa has prepared a series of questions that address the arts in Laguna Beach and encourage the community to participate. Doors will open at 10 a.m. and the forum will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m.
All are also invited to attend another forum for City Council candidates in Council Chamber at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, hosted by Laguna Beach branches of AAUW, League of Women Voters, and the Woman’s Club.
At 7 p.m. the following week, Oct. 19, a forum will be held for the 48th Congressional District with candidates Dana Rohrabacker and Ron Varasteh.
Whalen Hosts ‘Friendraiser’ at Big Fish
Candidate Bob Whalen’s Campaign for City Council will hold a “Friendraiser” reception Thursday, Aug. 30, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the House of Big Fish and Ice Cold Beer, 540 S. Coast Highway.
Residents ages 18-30 with both a valid California driver’s license and a local address are invited guests of the Whalen campaign. A donation of $25 per person is required for those over 30, with larger amounts welcome up to the $360 maximum.
“I believe it is important to have our young people engage in the political process. They are the future of Laguna Beach. At his event we will encourage them to get involved,” Whalen said in a statement.
“Having served on City Council for eight years, I believe Bob’s expertise in municipal finance, the leadership he demonstrated during 10 years on our school board and his current experience as a planning commissioner have prepared him to be an outstanding council member,” said local resident Kathleen Blackburn, a former mayor and Whalen campaign volunteer.
